Boost Your Immune System with Chiropractic Care

Boost Your Immune System with Chiropractic Care

It’s recently been suggested that there isn’t such a thing as “flu season,” but rather just a time when our collective immune systems are run down. And this makes perfect sense considering “flu season” falls between October and March during high travel times, peak party months with the holidays, and of course, winter weather in most of the country.

Let’s face it, the holidays alone can increase our emotional stress (family time), cause us to exercise less than we normally would, cheat on our diets with goodies, and get less sleep–all significant factors in decreasing our immune system’s ability to fight illness.

Most of us know the basic preventative measures that are imperative to preventing the spread of illness; good hygiene, frequent handwashing, covering our mouths when we cough, and so on. But in addition to these no-brainers, chiropractic care has also been proven to give your immune system a boost.

As our body’s primary defense, our immune system relies on many factors to function optimally. Having a healthy spine is one. Because our nervous system runs through the spine, it works with the immune system to help the body adapt and heal. In order for your immune system to operate optimally, your nervous system has to be functioning properly as well.

The chiropractic term for misalignments of the spine is subluxation. By getting a chiropractic adjustment to correct any spinal subluxation, you can get an immediate immune system boost. If your spine is misaligned it can cause neural dysfunctions that are stressful to the body. Stress leads to a weakened immune system and a decreased ability to fight the flu.

In conjunction with chiropractic care, take care of yourself to fight the flu. Doing this includes, getting plenty of rest, eating well, exercising, and washing your hands, of course. By keeping your immune system in prime fighting form, you can avoid “flu season.”
